In 2013, GVF received a William Penn Foundation grant, which was administered through DVRPC, which allowed for analysis of Schuylkill River Trails’ Mont Clare Bridge, which is a critical link on the trail between Montgomery and Chester Counties.
In October of 2019, construction began on the new connector of the Schuylkill River Trail across the Mont Clare Bridge, and it was completed in October of 2020.
This connection now allows for pedestrians and cyclists to safely travel from the Borough of Phoenixville in Chester County to the village of Mont Clare in Montgomery County, via a 0.2-mile section of the Schuylkill River Trail.
Now completed, this project offers new LED lighting both on the bridge connector as well as under the train trestle on the Phoenixville side; an enclosed walkway that protects pedestrians and cyclists from vehicle traffic, ADA accessible curbs, and lighted signage at each end showcasing the municipality one is entering into depending on the direction they are headed.
The collaboration of Phoenixville Borough, GVF, Chester County, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, PennDOT, and Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission staff with the Michael Baker design team were vital to the successful completion of this noteworthy project.
“GVF is excited that the Mont Clare Trail Bridge project is now completed for all to enjoy. This is an example of a project that GVF was created to help implement. The new connection will now allow people to safely ride their bikes and walk to work, shopping, and dining in a healthy and environmentally sustainable way. These are projects that we love to work on, and we are very proud to see it completed. We look forward to seeing its positive impact to our region for many years,” Rob Henry, Executive Director, GVF.
